MEDICINE PRICES FACTS AND FIGURES
Honorable IMRAN KHAN PRIME MINISTER OF PAKISTAN
Honorable AAMIR M. KIANI HEALTH MINISTER
The Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Association (PPMA) would like to clarify various misleading and false statements circulating in the media creating undue panic in the public.
Under your dynamic leadership and foresight, in consultation with all stakeholders and the endorsement of Honorable Supreme Court, the industry was able to overcome the challenge after 20 years of struggle to devise a just drug policy.
PPMA would like to acknowledge the efforts of your government for allowing a 15% price increase on drugs in January 2019 which was also endorsed and directed by Supreme Court. This has helped the Pharma industry in overcoming the impact of inflation on the cost of raw material, utilities and severe devaluation of more than 30% PKR against USD.
Approximately 450 (less than 1%) products were allowed to increase their prices by more than 15% owing to their long lasting status of hardship, due to massive devaluation and high inflation over the period of last 10 years.
This was done according to approved policy, after thorough evaluation process at DRAP and directives of Honorable Supreme Court. Many of these drugs were already out of market and others would have gone, causing unavailability of basic quality medicines to millions of patients in the country. PPMA assures the Government of Pakistan, its citizens and DRAP that we have duly followed all the rules and regulations while effecting price increases on the drugs.
Due to the local manufacturing industry, Pakistan is able to save approximately 5 billion USD per year & provide sizeable employment opportunities to educated youth of the country. These efforts are contributing to make Pakistan self-sufficient. The drug pricing policy is at par with SAARC countries.
We also assure to stand with the Government in its endeavor to provide safe, effective, quality and economical health solutions to our citizens.
PPMA has vision for 2020 to increase Pharma export to US $ 1 billion
